Frequently Asked Questions

Does FreeMyMusic.com take any ownership of your song?
That's a definite NO. Let there be no confusion, we say it here now. We take zero ownership of your intellectual property rights as a condition of joining this site and uploading your music. You can delete your songs whenever you wish from our systems, as long as it's not in a contest. This means at worse, we ask that you keep the song available on our site, IF you have chosen to enter a contest. And if you win, we have that song available for anyone to listen to on our "Past Contest Results" page until the contest that is running is completed.

Why do you take 30% of the $25 entry fee?
Well, the reason that we take an entry fee is because we bring great value for the 30% or $7.50. We not only host the song for what may be up to a month and a half, but most importantly we bring an audience to listen to your music as well providing the arena for the contest to take place. In your experience as a musician, if you feel that we are not worth the value of what $7.50 can bring, then I'm sorry, this site isn't for you. But for those that wish to put their music up against others to see if they rise to the top, to prove that for a fact, your music is good and people do like it… a lot!….. Then we welcome you.

Also, in an effort to bring value to our customers, the musicians, we have larger contests available which are $50, $100 and $200+. Our fees are lowered to 20% to 15% to 10%. If you want value in price, you can contest in our $25 contests, or you can get real value for your entry fee, by trying the larger contests which has a smaller cost as a percentage.

How do I vote for the winner?
OK, this is how the voting goes. All registered users, artists and music fans alike have 5 votes for each contest. A contest starts on the 1st and 16th of every month meaning the contest before has just finished. You can vote for one song once, not twice, but once. You can change your votes anytime you want. Next to your name on the top of this page, if you're logged in, you'll see how many votes you have remaining for the contest. Click on it, these are your votes. You can delete them if you want to, and vote for someone else. What we need for users to do is listen to the music and vote. You can change your mind later if you want to.

When a contest is finished, you will see in our "Past Contest Results" page, the winners of the contest, the number of votes they won with, and how much of the prize pool they won. We do not publish the names of those that didn't win money. We only publish those that have won money, since this exposure is a part of the prize of winning.

Also, ratings are not used to find the winner. The ratings and comments system is for you to provide feedback to the artist and the others that may listen to the song. However, ratings are used to break ties in the event that one or more song that has placed in the money is tied with someone else, so if you like the song, make a comment and rate.

What are the other features that you will be introducing?
Well, thank you for asking. We are going to bring features that we hope will benefit users as well as the musicians.
  • First thing is that we will (if you want), sell your songs for $.50 a song, and we split it with you 50/50. That means $.25 for each of us. Too little you think? Well, do you see how well iTunes is doing selling hundreds of millions of songs? But think about this, it's still more than the royalties that you would be getting per song on an album if you were signed by a major label. Also, think about all the mp3 players out there now and in the future. Why wouldn't people buy a song for $.50, it's half the price of iTunes, and way better than the stuff you hear on the radio all the time. Besides, these are the next superstars. For users of the site, we will sell songs in blocks of 10 for $5. Why $5? Because we can't do a credit card charge for 50 cents.
  • Second is our Fan Club. Music fans, this is how it works. From the musicians homepage you'll see a link to join the artist's fan club. You click it, you're joined. You want to un-join, you click it again. No commitments here. But if you find a good band, you may want to keep track of their music. This is how. For the artists we give them access to the demographic stats of their fans in our site, don't worry fans, no one's going to contact you because no one knows who you are. You privacy is safe with us. We tell them the age, sex, city and country. We do not give away your identity. This is a way for the artists to know who their fans are, without violating your right to privacy. On our Contest Announcement newsletters that you normally get, we will let you know if someone in your list of "Fan Clubs Joined", has entered a contest, and you can listen to them, and if you want, you can vote for them.
  • Another very valuable (there's the word value again) item is for our musicians. We will be selling subscriptions to music labels the results of the contests, the demographics of those that voted for them (no name or contact information is given), and the pure history of how well you did in these contests. What we wish for no less is the proof in fact that those who rise to the top in these contests are very good, and should be signed. We will be valuable to the A and R departments of record labels, because they must look for new and emerging talent at all times. If you are from a Record Label or another line of business that would like to find good talent, and would like to discuss these subscriptions, please contact us. So music fans must be vigilant. If you like a band. If you truly think that these artists deserve success, your votes are extremely important. You represent not only yourself; you represent a part of your demographic group. You are the voice of many others, so don't be silent. Vote.

What if an entrant cheats by creating fake accounts and voting for himself?
True, people will try to cheat if they can. That's a sad fact. However, we do have measures in place that allows us to spot and stop methods used to pad votes to one or more entries. But we hope the mere fact that this is a contest for money should discourage them. If someone does something to effect the natural progression of this contest then they have committed a criminal act. All countries have laws against stealing money. This isn't a prank, you are stealing these people's money, and that means years in jail if you get caught, and we will catch you. It's just not worth it.

Can I upload songs that I didn't write or perform on?
That's a definite NO. The FreeMyMusic.com service is for original music which you own all copyrights to and have the right to distribute. If you upload songs which you do not own, you will forfeit your entry fee, and be disqualified from that contest. If you have won a cash prize on the contest, then it will be a legal matter between you and the copyright owner.

What do I do if someone has upload my music?
If you have the rights to a song and you hear it on our site, contact us. If you can prove that it was your song, then we will pull that song from the contest. If the song has already won a cash prize, then you will have to pursue that person on your own. We will remove the song from our site however.

How much money can I win?
That depends on how many people enter the category. You will see how the payout works by going to the payout table page. A link is provided at the foot of this page. A calculator is provided.

My category of music isn't listed.
The great thing about FreeMyMusic.com is that if your category isn't listed, then you can create your own. If you want to enter a smaller contest, or create a niche category, go ahead. Once you create and enter category, it'll be visible for everyone else to join. You must qualify with at least 10 entries by the start date of the next contest for it to go live. If it doesn't qualify, don't worry, you won't lose anything. You'll just stay in the next contest stage until it qualifies. Also, if you don't want to stay in this category, then you can move it to any other category that you want.

How do I win?
You win by people liking your music. But you can invite as many people as you want to register and vote for you. This way your odds of winning are increased.

Can I enter more than one song per contest?
You can enter as many songs as you want.

How do I get paid when I win?
When you win, we put your winnings into your account. From there, you can use the funds to enter more contests, or you can choose to have us send you your money. Our preferred method of payment is PayPal. If you have a problem with this method, please contact us, so we can figure out a way to send you your money.

If I win a contest, can I enter the song again?
Yes, you can.

Can I promote my entry in the contest?
Not only can you, we highly encourage you to. This will increase your likelihood of winning, as long as they vote for you, that is.

Can I get a refund after a contest has started?
We're sorry, but once a contest is started, or 24 hours prior to the start then it's too late. If you want your money back before then, we have a $2 charge. But you don't need to withdraw, just change to another category or another contest. You don't lose your money if your contest doesn't go live it just stays in the next contest area till it qualifies.

How does the "my music manager" work in the musician login?
Before anything, upload song, then you'll see theses options for each of your song.
  1. Edit- you edit your song details, such as the title, and the description you put on it. You can change it whenever you want and how often you want.
  2. Enter Contest - You use this to enter a contest. From here you will select the category that you want to enter in, or if you want to create a category.
  3. Change Entry - You can change the category you're in. You have up to 24 hours prior to the start of the contest to make changes. If your entry is in a category that didn't go live, because it had less than 10 people in it, you didn't lose your entry fee. Just stay in the contest that you're in, or change it to the category that you want.
  4. Withdraw Contest - This is where you can withdraw your entry. Be aware, we charge a $2 fee for withdrawing from the contest. We do this because we picked up a charge when we charged them. But why withdraw, you can move your entry around without any problems, and you don't lose anything for just staying in next contest.
  5. Delete Song - This is so you can remove the song from this site. Our only restriction to this is when you are live in a contest, and the final 24 hours before the start of the contest. Also, if you win, your song is placed in the "past contest results" page until the next contest is finished.

What time zone are you in?
We are on Pacific US Time and all contest dates and times are based on this time zone.
